The role of civil society in establishing the public policy of national memory in Ukraine

Abstract
The purpose of the article is to clarify the role of civil society in the formation of the public policy of national memory in Ukraine in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The research was carried out on the basis of normative legal acts of the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR, official documents of public associations operating in Ukraine during the specified period, as well as using scientific developments of domestic researchers on certain aspects of the problem.
In the process of preparing the article, general scientific methods (analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, explanation and generalization) were used in combination with interdisciplinary and special methods. The application of historical, systemic, structural-functional, logical approaches to scientific research made it possible to reveal social processes and activities of public associations in the field of revival and preservation of national memory in the late 1980s - early 1990s.
The article reveals the activities of public organizations united in Ukraine regarding the revival of history, culture, language, traditions and the preservation of the national memory of the Ukrainian people. The influence of public activism on the policy of the Soviet government was clarified and the decisions of the government in response to the actions of society, which contributed to the formation of the public policy of national memory in Ukraine in the late 1980s and early 1990s, were investigated. It is proved that the process of formation of the public policy of national memory in Ukraine was inextricably linked with the birth of civil society.
As a result of the research work, a conclusion was made about the important role of the civil society of Ukraine in the process of formation of the public policy of national memory in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
